Nadav Kander - Yangtze: The Long River (2009-12)

“Finishing Yangtze: The Long River required three years and five trips to China, ‘a place that is moving and changing so fast that it can only be unnatural,’ [Kander] said.

In 2005, around the time Mr. Kander started thinking about the project, he was intrigued by China’s rapid growth and constant change. ‘It was a place that I wanted to stand in,’ he said.

The Yangtze, flowing nearly 4,000 miles from Qinghai Province to the East China Sea, seemed a natural yet challenging path to trace.

‘I love the metaphor of water,’ Mr. Kander said. ‘Like life, like humanness, it becomes a cloud. It’s an ever-changing cycle. I find it comforting.’

Because what he was seeing wasn’t so much about China — grand structures or tourist vistas — as it was about compassion. He saw a beauty in the moments he witnessed, as people lived out their daily lives and traditions in circumstances so much different from his own.

‘It’s much more about what you don’t show than what you do show,’ he said. ‘I think work that asks you to question what more there is is much more interesting.’”

Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul. Lo-lee-ta: the tip of the tongue taking a trip of three steps down the palate to tap, at three, on the teeth. Lo. Lee. Ta. She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita.

April 22, 1899: Vladimir Nabokov is born.

Vladimir Nabokov was born in Saint Petersburg and wrote many of his novels (including his earliest nine) in Russian, but his most famous work, the controversial classic Lolita, was written in English. Nabokov was born to an aristocratic Russian statesman (killed in 1922 by monarchist assassins) and his wife; the Nabokovs enjoyed a cushy and privileged lifestyle in St. Petersburg until 1919, when they were forced into exile in Western Europe. There, Nabokov studied at Cambridge, wrote short stories and poetry under a pseudonym, and composed his first major work in English - The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, shortly before he and his family (including his Jewish wife, Vera Nabokov née Slonim) fled to the United States from France in 1940 with the onset of the German invasion of France.

In the U.S., Nabokov worked at a number of institutions (New York’s Museum of Natural History, Stanford, Wellesley, Harvard, and Cornell) teaching in a number of different fields (entomology, creative writing, comparative literature, Russian, and Russian and European literature). In addition to his fiction writing, Nabokov was also an accomplished literary critic, chess problemist, and entomologist - in fact, he wrote his most famous novel while studying butterflies in the Rocky Mountains. Lolita and Pale Fire (1962) were ranked fourth and fifty-third on the Modern Library’s 100 Best Novels List, respectively.

The rise of genocidal Buddhist racism against the Rohingya, a minority community of nearly one million people in the western Burmese province of Rakhine (also known as Arakan), is an international humanitarian crisis. The military-ruled state has been relentless in its attempts to erase Rohingya ethnic identity, which was officially recognized as a distinct ethnic group in 1954 by the democratic government of Prime Minister U Nu. Indeed, in the past months of violent conflict, beginning in June 2012, the Rohingya have suffered over 90 percent of the total death toll and property destruction, including the devastation of entire villages and city neighborhoods. Following the initial eruption of violence in western Burma, several waves of killing, arson, and rampage have been directed at the Rohingya, backed by Burma’s security forces.

— Dr. Maung Zarni, Buddhist Nationalism in Burma

Photos— Jonathan Saruk: Kutupalong and Leda Refugee Camp, Bangladesh, November 14 and 19.

One of my 308i students asked me the following question: if North Korea had continued to practice Buddhism, would they be less violent. I responded with a brief explication of the North Korean cultural situation, indicating that I was not an expert, and why that question was built upon orientalist assumptions about Buddhism.

The above came in as part of my explication following the “North Korea” question: essentially I presented a history of Buddhism and Buddhist nations as not inherently less violent because they are Buddhist. Burma was an example, as was Japan during World War II. Buddhism, like Shinto, Confucianism, and other Eastern religions are not immune from providing the impetus for, and support of, aggressive military actions.

If any of my followers are interested in Buddhism and conflict, I’d suggest reading the following:

Buddhist Warfare by Michael K. Jerryson and Mark Jurgensmeyer

Buddhism and Violence edited by Michael Zimmerman

Gender composition of scholarly publications (1665 - 2011)

Like, THIS THIS ALL OF THIS, but I don’t think this graphic alone even demonstrates how bad the situation is.

Here’s another one of the images from the article:

Not only are men overwhelmingly the authors of scientific papers, but when women *are* given authorship, it’s somewhere in the middle of the author list.

This might seem a little irrelevant if you’re unfamiliar with the academy, so here’s a helpful primer, courtesy PhD comics:

Just to reiterate: the first author led the project. The last author (the PI) heads the lab. These are, really, the only two names anyone reading the paper cares about, even though the peeps in the middle (third author to third-to-last author) did the lion’s share of the actual science.

Women are the worker bees of the scientific academy. They’re admitted to tech and beginning graduate groups in droves, but the glass ceiling hits hard somewhere between their post-doc and first tenured position.

Women are doing science. They just aren’t getting any of the credit.

Reblogged for this excellent commentary. I’m more aware of how discrimination works in Humanities, so it’s interesting to have more information on the science field specific bias.

If anyone’s curious about this and wants a more thorough breakdown, Cordelia Fine’s book “Delusions of Gender,” is pretty excellent. Also I have the pdf if you want it, just inbox me. c:

in 1931, they sued their managers and became independent performers. they moved to the vaudeville circuit and became successful. in 1961, their tour manager abandoned them in charlotte, north carolina, with no income. they took a job at a local grocery store. they died in 1969 of the hong kong flu

Natsume Soseki is probably best known as a novelist, sometimes referred to as the Charles Dickens of Japan. He wrote stories with both humanity and an unflinching eye. But he was also a teacher, a cultural critic, a Zen practitioner, and an author of haiku.

Soseki began his career as a scholar of English literature, he later resigned from his position at Tokyo Imperial Univ. to devote his time to writing. In the early 1900’s several of his stories were published in serialized form in magazines, establishing his career as a writer.

Around this time, Soseki also started showing signs of tuberculosis, an illness he never fully shook off. This illness and other stresses contributed to a state of depression. To cope with his depression, Soseki began to practice Zen meditation. You can perceive the reflection of his deep practice within his poetry.

His first published work, Wagahai wa neko de aru [I am a cat], a satirical portrait of human vanity, was followed by increasingly pessimistic, brooding novels such as Kokoro [heart] and his unfinished masterpiece, Meian [light and darkness]. Soseki’s works often dwell upon the alienation of modern humanity, the search for morality, and the difficulty of human communication.

I would like to add that he was also a very charming man.
